Nice in April 2003
We had a week in Nice at the end of March/beginning of April. The intention was to get in a day's skiing at Isola 2000, but we never made it: the weather was good in Nice and there were too many lie-ins followed by leisurely lunches to contemplate such intense activity.

A few jobs got done - we have finally bought some bikes (nothing fancy, distinctly 'sit-up-and-beg') from Carrefour in Nice. I have to say that more energy is expended getting the blasted things out of the cave, through four fire doors and up the ramp into day-light before we've started, let alone repeating the procedure in reverse at the end. Bit of a tight fit in the cave as well.

We also bought this computer so that I can keep in touch with my friends, eavesdrop on angloinfo.com and mess about with this site.

La Cave Royale - wine merchant in rue Cassini
The husband also put a wine-rack up, very snazzy Italian job, but in fact bought from a shop in Bold Street, Liverpool. I am very proud of it hence the photo...
durr! This is the right way - no tilted bottles
my fancy new wine rack
I've no idea how it stays up but the husband assures me it's fine. I think I'll just have another bottle to even the weight distribution...
A new discovery for us this April:  La Cave Royale is a tiny  wine shop on rue Cassini. The owner, Jacques, speaks great english (having worked in the UK) and following the request  "Please choose six bottles for us, all under 10 euros", gave us a great selection.
December 2006: Shop now for sale, sadly
Jan 2004 - we finally figured out that starting from the other side meant that the bottles are now in a neat perpendicular column - as opposed to tilted in the photo on the left. Durrr!
There are some restaurants we tried for the first time that I can recommend:

'The New Port', rue François Guisol, by the Port. Looks more of a bar from the road but don't let that put you off - there's a great little restaurant at the back with one special every day for lunch. It was rabbit the day we went. It was also full of french (a good sign I think)

Also...
La Claire Fontaine, Place Rossetti, Veille Nice
'au viuex four', 1 rue Emmanuel Philibert
'Au Vieux Four'  1, rue Emmanuel Philibert - step out of the apartment and turn right for 50 metres! Very good value (ok, cheap) Pizzas, cooked in a wood-burning oven, from about 5 euros, bottles of wine from 5 euros. Always full.
La Claire Fountaine, Place Rossetti, Vieux Nice (the old town)

Three-course menu for about 11 euros, wine from about 7 euros a bottle. Nice food and atmosphere. Great location - in front of the Baroque Cathedral, St Reparate.
