Guided Tours of Nice If you have limited time or would prefer to be guided through Nice in person rather than via a map and guide book then you may be interested in the following options. I usually try a mix of both guided tours and self-reliance with books and maps. It's certainly very pleasant to have the hard work removed occasionally. Open-top bus tour A useful initial tour of Nice is 'Le Grand Tour' of Nice. It's about 1.5 hours of open-top bus through Nice and up into the hills of Cimiez with pre-recorded commentary via individual headphones. I have written more about this tour in my virtual tourist tips. The service is 'hop-on, hop-off' and 2-day tickets are available (tip - the leaflet advertising this tour in the Tourist Office often has a money off coupon attached): Le Grand Tour Little Tourist Train A long-established tour of the Old Town and Chateau Hill of Nice is via the little Tourist Train. Children like this trip although I have to say, once is enough. The commentary is continuous and quickly becomes out of sync with the surroundings. Quite good fun, once. The little Tourist Train (a snazzed up tractor pulling three carriages actually) leaves every half hour or so from the Gardens Albert Premier on the promenade ds Anglais and stops for refreshments/photos at the top of the Chateau Hill before returning to the promenade des Anglais. More details can be found on its website: The little Tourist Train website Guided walking tour of Old Nice A new tour that we tried in August 2004 is the guided walking tour of Old Nice. This is excellent and I thoroughly recommend it. All the details can be found on the following page: Guided walking tour of Old Nice Old Nice market tour and cookery class This new one-day market tour and cooking class in Nice for food lovers, gourmands and general bon viveurs looks wonderful. This one is definitely on my wish list. http://www.petitsfarcis.com/ DIY tour If you prefer to arrange your own tour of Old Nice, the Tourist Office has a suggested route and brief guide to the main sights in Old Nice, which you can print off directly from the web site. The link is: Itinerary for a walk in Old Nice Also check out the following guide books on Nice: recommended reading about Nice Other tours For a private personal tour, I suggest you contact Alice Barker: www.amb-riviera.com The details of other organised tours can be found via the Nice Tourist Office website or in their offices. I have not tried any of these tours but you can get to Monaco, St Paul de Vence, etc. Although it is easy enough to take the bus from Nice and go independently with a guide book, a private guided tour is both luxurious and practical if you have limited time. The link to see the main tour companies is here: Nice Tourist Office list of local tour operators

The husband and daughter take in the sights, Summer 2003 This Open -top bus tour takes you through one of Nice's finest squares, Place Garibaldi, at the back of the Old Town. This 17th Century square links the Old Town and Port with the modern city centre.

Birds' eye view of the Cours Saleya, August 2004 I have been coming to Nice for five years and this is the first time I realised there are steps half-way along the Cours Saleya which lead to nowhere (originally they led to a high walk way so that the gentry could walk from the Chateau Hill to the Opera House without the need to mix with the hoi palloi in the market) but provide a perfect platform for photos, a real birds' eye view of the market. Part of the guided walking tour of Old Nice. See my review for more details.
